I was putting up some Power of Personal Change flyers around town the other day and met one of our podcast listeners. Always keen to deliver what people want, I asked her for ideas about what she’d like to know more about.
“Resilience”, she replied without a shred of hesitation.
She commented that we’re in times where resilience — both individual and community — is needed more than ever.

We need resilience more than ever
There’s a lot going on in the world right now, much of it wild and scary. It’s a time when resilience — flexibility with an ability to bounce back from adversity — is crucial.
NLP offers many skills and tools for building resilience. I’ve included links to places on the website where you can explore some of these in more detail. However, to get the whole toolkit, come and train with me. 😊 In the meantime, here are 12 options for building resilience using NLP tools and techniques.
1. Spot the Quirks in Your Thought Patterns:
I know I have some pretty quirky ways of my own — like eating cheese scones spread with jam. (Hey don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!) But what about the quirks hidden within your mind? NLP helps you uncover those annoying thought patterns, emotions, and resultant behaviours. Once you discover your own internal rebel, you can subdue him or her and take back your life. Resilience is a piece of cake (or cheese scone!) once you realise what you’re cooking up in your head.

2. Conversational Wizardry: Talking The Talk
NLP takes communication up a notch. Learn the art of impeccable communication and rapport-building. Communication skills are important for resilience because they help you collaborate with others and ask for help when needed. Learn how to talk so folks listen, and build rapport like you’re chatting with your best mate at the local cafe.

3. Emotional Regulation: Keeping Cool Under Pressure
Life will throw you curveballs, and it’s important to keep your cool, especially if you want to deal with said curveballs. NLP provides tools to manage and regulate your emotions. This is crucial in resilience-building, allowing you to stay calm and composed under pressure, and making it easier to adapt to adversity.

4. Goal Setting and Motivation: Goals That Make Sense
NLP provides techniques for setting clear and achievable goals and enhancing motivation.
Setting and working towards goals gives you a sense of purpose and direction, which contributes to your resilience. If you want to feel motivated towards your goals, you must do more than just visualise them. You need to ‘sensualise’ them. I cover this aspect of goal setting and how to do it in my Goal Setting book.

5. Change Management: How to roll with the changes
Some people don’t want change at all; they want everything to stay the same. A majority will accept changes that develop over time. And a handful of people love dramatic and constant change. Regardless of your change preference, change is inevitable. NLP has methods to reframe your perspective and view change as a positive experience.
6. Stress-Busting: Without the Posh Spa:
Chronic stress can devastate your ability to cope with challenges, as well as affect your immune system. It’s important to use techniques such as visualisation and anchoring to reduce your anxiety and stress and build resilience. Try out my Calm Spot for a 71/2 minute taster. People say it’s better than a spa treatment — and you don’t even need to leave your seat. (You’re welcome! 😊)
